I, like many others, was very skeptical of the benefits of meditation. I also would think even if it does work, when would I have time to do it?…I am much too busy. Mediation not only worked for me, it made me more productive, responsive and peaceful. Now it gets to the point that when I feel overwhelmed with work, I purposely break to meditate. Like clockwork, a short time after a meditation break, not only have I accomplished everything I wanted, but also have finished everything so fast that I wind up having some unexpected free time.

I have come to the conclusion, it is the feeling of being out of control that really brings us down. That feeling makes us unfocused and sometimes in fear of consequences that would never occur if we only stayed on track. Meditation allows us to stay on track…it teaches the mind to focus on the task at hand. Best of all, practicing meditation will make your results better as time goes on. At first you may need 10 minutes to relax while eventually you could reach that stage in 10 seconds.

How does it work? I believe each of us is different, so different methods may work for different individuals; however, I have had incredible results with the Silva Method. Silva’s use of visualization is really powerful for me, because I am very visually oriented. Basically, while relaxing you visualize a tranquil place. You could be sitting on a beach, fishing or walking outdoors. I take the technique a bit further by trying to imagine every detail about a scene. For example, I often think about walking around a pond I am familiar with and I picture the texture in the leaves of plants and the all the insects crawling and flying around.

Why does it work? You brain has the ability to process thousands of different bits of information a second. We all suffer from a little Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) from time to time. Life is coming at us from every angle and the brain starts to lose focus on what you are trying to accomplish. You may be having a conversation with you spouse and thinking about a project at work or if you remembered to shut the light off in the garage a minute ago. We all possess the capabilities to multitask, but if our brain was our desk…it gets cluttered after a while. Meditation cleans that up. It relaxes you. It makes you feel back in control. Best of all, the brain is just like any other muscle in your body…the more you work it…the stronger it gets.

How can you try it? You need a place you will not be disturbed for about 15-30 minutes. Quiet is good, but you could focus out noise. At the very worst, you should be able to drive somewhere and park and do this in your car. The best place would be a nice easy chair at home. Just sit and think about all the positive things in you life now and what you want in the future. Sounds simple, but it really is powerful–the trick is staying positive and focused.

There are some audio tracks you can purchase to help you get started. Silva uses a tapping beat called the Alpha sound to slow your brainwaves. From the research I have done this is actually a very powerful technique. Just before you wake from sleep your brain is functioning at what is referred to as an Alpha level wave. Silva states this brainwave is prevalent in small children and geniuses. To be honest, to date I have not been able to find any evidence to prove this, but I have had incredible results with meditating while listening to the Alpha sound. My best guess is it slows the brain down and allows it to focus.

I have also had some amazing results with self-healing with the use of meditation. My stress migraines and back aches have virtually disappeared. During my sessions, I spend a few minutes concentrating on an aligned and healthy spine. I actually visualize each bone in my spine lining up and coming into alignment. I work my way up to my brain and imagine my brain working in rhythm and harmony.

Many athletes have what they consider “The Zone.” It is a place where they can function at their peak potential. “The Zone” is nothing more than a state of mind. Super human feats are usually performed with this state of mind. Martial artist will split concrete and drive nails through wood with the same bone and flesh that would break under so-called “normal” circumstances. Why is that? It is all within our minds.

Meditation conditions the brain to easily reach points of peak potentially. Now with that extra brain strength, it will be up to you what you want to accomplish with that potential.
