Watching the birth of my son recently gave me great pause and really demonstrated the enormous blessing that life really is. But most of all, it has fascinated me to new levels of thinking. I find myself pondering….What are a baby’s thoughts? It may seem like a comical question to ask, but I think it is a glimpse at the fundamental of life itself and maybe even a key to boundless energy to be who we thrive to be.

My son was born about 3 weeks early so his little body practically fit in my one hand. As I held him in total amazement, you cannot help but notice life spring forth. Within moments he opened his eyes and started flailing his tiny arms and legs. I was caught completely off guard not expecting his little blue eyes to lock on mine so early. I was not really sure what to expect this being my first child, but I was really thinking there would be a scared, screaming infant in terror of this new dramatically different world. Here he is warm and comfortable in his mother’s quiet womb and within a moment notice he is pulled out into a cold, loud, chaotic world. What could have been going through his mind? If his face could say anything at the time, he was more calm than me.

However, after I spoke to the pediatrician and researched early childhood development it started dawned on me on how amazing this little mind must be. Babies are born with almost no sight. Obviously, they have little muscle control and therefore cannot crawl, grab things, or even hold their heads up…but this does little to stop them from trying. Almost immediately, he would squeeze my finger when I placed it in his hands. Within 2 days, he started to lift his tiny head back to catch a glimpse of your face. He kicks and struggles to crawl when you lay him on your chest. What drives all of this? Instincts? It is just blind physical development or something more…..I believe is it a innate thirst that comes from life itself. The same power a seedling uses to break through the soil. The power to fight past daunting obstacles. The power to be.

So imagine yourself in this young soul’s shoes. No vision, no muscle control, no power to fend for yourself but a will that drives you to overcome almost impossible odds. With no one cheering you on but yourself in most cases. You must not know at first that you can, but I believe there is a sense you must. An inner drive to see. A drive to move. A drive to stand. But most of all an undeterred attitude. No matter how many times you fall, you must try again.

And now when I look at this tiny being and think of the power he possesses to overcome adversity, I also then think how powerful we must be at many times his size. Unfortunately, many of us have forgotten what we accomplished only because it seems all too common. Most will waive it away with the thought of we are born to do those “common” things….I will only counter with the idea that you are also born with a unique purpose in life as well. Inside you is a talent that to you may seem as common as walking. How many masterpieces are within you? Waiting to break the surface much like that seedling. Do you have the power to be?
