One of my promises this year is to make more time to write. I hope these articles help you as much as they do me. I highly suggest writing your own stories down, since they help you refine the thoughts and sometime even make you draw new conclusions about them.

This is a year I have been looking forward to. First of all, I am soon to be a daddy! That should bring a new perspective to life. Next, I think my mental growth is finally starting to pay dividends and I have been having some of the most incredible opportunities and experiences. Sometimes I feel I just started living again.

Just like the song says….
If you want to be somebody else,
If you’re tired of fighting battles with yourself
If you want to be somebody else
Change your mind…

Help Yourself to Life!

Just like they tell you on the air plane “Secure your own air mask, before helping others” you have to take care of yourself first and foremost in life. I am not being selfish here, but think of it as you actually have to be around to help the people you care about. If you are second place, you will never find time to take care of yourself. You will constantly say…I’ll do it tomorrow. Just like any saving program, put that time aside for yourself first before you budget for anything else.

Stop Complaining!

Take that advice from a once constant complainer. I use to brag that I was “put on this earth to point out what was wrong.” That attitude made me an easy target for depression and sickness. I also had terrible migraine headaches and gained about 20 extra pounds. I was taken in for chest pains once and started developing high blood pressure all before the age of 32.

In training managers on how to deal with “difficult” employees I would explain to them to remember that each and every person believes they are right in what they do. Think about it, if they did not know the difference between right and wrong they would be in a prision or a rubber room. That is what we lable irrational thought. However, it is only irrational to you the observer.

It is amazing what occurs when managers truly understand this concept. Instead of getting mad and maybe exploding on an employee, they start having empathy and try to really understand what made the employee’s work under par. They actually try to solve the problem. It is also amazing what happens with the employee. Instead of thinking that “the boss is always picking on me” they really begin to admire their boss and their morale and productivity rises.
